Lamego's

Our story

From the Douroto your door

A Portuguese city famous for fire and smoke. A lucky rooster with a legend of its own. And a Scottish takeaway that asked one question: what if peri peri met the naga?

A city built on fire & flavour

Lamego is a hillside city in northern Portugal’s Douro Valley, wine-terrace country so striking it’s a UNESCO World Heritage landscape, woven into the founding legends of Portugal and crowned by a sanctuary you reach up 686 steps.

For centuries its kitchens have cooked with smoke and flame: cured hams, smoked sausages, bread baked in fire. Real heat, real flavour, no shortcuts. We took the name because we took the attitude.

The lucky bird

Portugal’s most famous icon is a colourful rooster, from an old folk tale where a roasted bird stood up on the plate and crowed to prove an innocent man’s word. Ever since, the rooster has meant faith, justice and good luck.

Ours carries the same luck with one difference. Look at the tail: red, orange, yellow and green. Every feather is a stop on our heat scale. Pick yours.

Two chillies, one obsession

Peri perithe fire we inherited

Peri peri is an Afro-Portuguese love story. Portuguese traders carried chillies around the world, and in southern Africa one small, fierce variety took root: the African bird’s eye, whose name just means “pepper pepper”.

Cooks in Mozambique and Angola married it to garlic, lemon and Portuguese spice as a marinade for flame-grilled chicken. The dish conquered Portugal, then the world. We marinate ours in house spices and grill it to order.

Nagathe twist that’s ours

The naga is a legend of the chilli world, a superhot from Bengal and Northeast India whose family once held the title of hottest on Earth. In UK takeaway culture, naga is the badge of serious heat.

We tamed it into a sauce that’s sweet, tangy and deep: heat with flavour, never heat for its own sake. Over donner, in wraps, on fries, on pizza. That’s why we’re the home of the naga and peri peri.
